Course Description:

This class explores the basis for treatment of the cervical spine and cranial base. Specific focus will be given to global and local challenge testing, clinical knowledge of embryology, anatomy, and neurology, and selective tissue palpation as diagnostic tools and guides to treatment.

Proper assessment of somatic dysfunction requires identification of altered tissue function that results in altered mechanics, altered autonomic tone, aberrant reflex arcs, and abnormal fluid mechanics. This class focuses on the development and advancement of clinical skills to differentiate normal vs. abnormal tissue states (i.e. sympathetic / parasympathetic dominant tone vs. neurohormonal vs. reflex arc driven dysfunction). Specific focus will be given to the identification, localization and treatment of Jones Tender Points, Trigger Points, and 2-Hand techniques in the head, neck, upper thorax and upper extremity. This course is recommended for manual therapists and those licensed to treat patients with hands-on technique.

Cervical Spine I: Manual Treatment of the Cervical Spine (SLC)

Target audience: Licensed healthcare providers including, but not limited to:

PT, AT, DC, MT, RN, OT, and ND.

BOC Essential Level

18 contact hours – 18 1-A hours anticipated

 Instructors: Neal O'Neal, PT and Dennis Eaton, MPT

Learning Objectives: Upon course completion, the participant will be able to-

1) Palpate the discrete structures of the cranial base, cervical spine, clavicles, sterno-manubrium, and upper thoracic cage;

2) Ask appropriate patient history questions that take into account new, research-based understanding of cervical function;

3) Identify, palpate and test motion or irritation of the occiput and cervical spine and the suboccipital to T1 nerve roots.

4) Demonstrate various treatment strategies such as muscle energy, counterstrain-positional release, Neurolymphatic and Neurovascular Techniques,

5) Perform appropriate Global and Regional provocation tests for the head and neck.

Materials Provided: A binder of the course materials will be provided to each student to follow along and take notes during the lecture and lab portions of the class.

Purpose: The purpose of this class is to provide the clinical practitioner with the knowledge of how recent research has changed current clinical treatment approaches to the cervical spine.

Expected outcomes are to develop effective delineation and treatment strategies based upon an integration of new information and the extensive body of knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, and embryology of the head and neck. This class will enhance participant learning through the use of discussion, audio-visual materials, recent research evidence.
